About Me
PERSONAL
My name is Shannon Bowles and I live with my family in Layton, UT. I have been married to my favorite person for 21 years. We have four fantastic kids and two mischievous, but lovable, dogs. My children are involved in all kinds of activities–guitar, cello, fencing, digital media arts, student government and more. I love reading, baking, sunsets, movies, swimming and a clean house. Life at our house is loud and busy and beautiful.
PROFESSIONAL
I began my career in the therapy world as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist working in eating disorder and addiction treatment settings. After taking several years to be a full time mom, I re-entered the workforce in the education field. I have five years of experience as an English language instructor. I absolutely adored my EL students and built strong relationships with them and their families. It was such a joy to watch their progress with the language and their increased confidence. During that time I also held roles as a teacher mentor and coach, providing professional learning for hundreds of teachers.
That experience led me to my current work at Reading Horizons, a foundational literacy curriculum company. I have 4 years of experience facilitating professional learning and coaching for educators who are using the Reading Horizons program. My current role as a Partnership Consultant allows me to work closely with districts and schools during the curriculum adoption phase and throughout implementation to support students and teachers to increase reading proficiency. I am passionate about literacy and love the opportunity I have to see student success outcomes!
EDUCATIONAL
I earned my BS in Recreation and Youth Management with an emphasis in Recreation Therapy from BYU in 2005, followed by TESOL certification in 2017. In Fall 2022, I began my M.Ed. in Applied Digital Learning at Lamar University, driven by a desire to deepen my learning and grow as an educator. This site originally launched as a space to reflect and blog about that journey. I completed my master’s in 2023, and the site is now evolving into a platform to share ongoing work, ideas, and resources. Explore the What I’m Working On and What I’m Learning pages to see more.
