Action Research Measurement Strategy

Throughout the ADL program I have been developing an innovation plan that focuses on implementing a blended learning approach to professional learning (PL) within my organization, Reading Horizons. In this course, I put together a plan to conduct an action research study on how blended learning might affect PL attendees’ experience and level of preparedness for implementing the Reading Horizons Discovery program. The mission of Reading Horizons is to eradicate illiteracy. How we prepare educators to deliver foundational reading instruction is likely to have an effect on student literacy outcomes. The purpose of my study is to determine in what ways, if any, a blended learning approach to professional learning will affect PL attendees’ level of understanding of the Reading Horizons Discovery program and their confidence in implementing it with students. When educators have a full understanding of program content, methodology, and resources, they will be more confident and effective teachers for their students.

I started by outlining the topic of my research and the purpose of my study. I worked on narrowing my topic to a fundamental research question and then determined a design for my study. This lead me to consider how I would collect and analyze data to share with stakeholders in my organization.

Once I had an outline for my research, I began working on a literature review in preparation for conducting my action research study looking at the effects, if any, of blended learning PL on K-3 educator program knowledge and preparedness to deliver effective foundational literacy instruction. By delving into the existing body of research on blended learning models, pedagogy and effectiveness I was able to establish a foundation of background knowledge and understanding for my current action research.

Finally, I was able to put all of my work together into a cohesive Action Research Plan that clearly explains all aspects of my study. This action research plan includes information about why this research is important, what current research says about blended learning, how I will conduct the study and then what I will do with the results. This plan is is fully formed, including a timeline for gathering data, and ready to implement.
